Before You Apply

Is this course right for me?

Level 2 is designed for people beginning their counselling journey. You don’t need previous counselling experience-just a willingness to learn, reflect and engage with the process.

What are you looking for in applicants?

We’re not looking for people who have all the answers. We’re looking for openness, curiosity and a genuine interest in learning.

I’m worried I’m too quiet. Does that matter?

Not at all. There isn’t one type of person who becomes a counsellor. Many excellent counsellors are thoughtful listeners rather than the loudest voices in the room.

I’ve been out of education for years. Will I cope?

Many of our learners return to study after a long break. We’ll guide you through the course and assessment as your confidence develops.

What if I’m not sure I want to become a counsellor?

That’s okay. Many learners join Level 2 to explore whether counselling is the right path while developing skills that are valuable in everyday life and many professions.

Learning at DATS

Why does DATS focus on experiential learning?

We believe counselling can’t be learned through theory alone. Alongside learning concepts, you’ll practise skills, reflect on your experiences and learn through discussion and relationship.

Why are the groups kept small?

Small groups create space for meaningful participation, thoughtful discussion and supportive feedback.

Why do you encourage reflection?

Reflection helps us understand ourselves, our assumptions and how we relate to others. It is a key part of becoming an effective practitioner.

Why is discussion such an important part of learning?

Different perspectives deepen understanding. We believe some of the richest learning happens through respectful conversation.

Why do you teach online?

Online delivery makes training accessible to more people while still providing an interactive, relational learning experience.

What kind of learning environment do you create?

We aim to create a learning community where people feel welcomed, supported, appropriately challenged and encouraged to grow.

Accessibility & Inclusion

What does accessibility mean at DATS?

We believe learning should be challenging, not inaccessible. Wherever possible we explore reasonable adjustments while maintaining CPCAB standards.

Why do you talk so much about diversity?

Difference enriches learning. Every learner brings unique experiences that broaden perspectives and deepen understanding.

What if I have dyslexia, ADHD or another access need?

Please contact us before the course begins. We’ll explore together what reasonable adjustments may support your learning.

About the Course

Will I have to share personal experiences?

Reflection is encouraged, but you are never expected to disclose anything you’re uncomfortable sharing.

Will there be counselling skills practice?

Yes. Skills practice is a core part of every teaching session.

Is there an exam?

No. Assessment is through a CPCAB portfolio built throughout the course.

How much study is involved outside sessions?

You’ll complete reading, reflective activities and portfolio work between weekly sessions.

Can I miss sessions?

Regular attendance is important because learning happens through participation, discussion and skills practice.

Progression & Becoming a Counsellor

Can anyone become a counsellor?

There isn’t one type of person who becomes a counsellor. People arrive with different experiences, personalities and strengths.

Can counselling training really change you as a person?

Many learners discover greater self-awareness, confidence and new ways of understanding themselves and others alongside developing counselling skills.

What happens after Level 2?

Successful completion can lead to CPCAB Level 3 and Level 4, or enhance careers in a wide range of helping professions.
